Inflammatory Bowel Disease





The upcoming topic on The Natural Health Show tomorrow, Saturday, December 7th, which also includes my Radical Remedies segment on detox, is on Inflammatory Bowel Disease. So why not write a blog about it, right?
To begin with IBD is actually a list of eight separate diseases, but the main ones are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. They both affect our gastrointestinal tract (i.e. the food tract which begins at the mouth and ends at the little hole of your behind) and both are on the rise in industrialized countries, including Canada. They are also both considered to be autoimmune diseases, which means that they are caused by an over active immune system. This also causes excessive inflammation. What is different about them is that Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and has skip lesions, which means that it can affect the GI tract at separate locations along its length. It also affects the entire thickness of the GI track wall. Ulcerative colitis, on the other hand, affects just the large intestine (i.e. the colon) and the rectum. It has no skip lesions and it affects only the inner lining of the wall of the colon. Continue reading

Healthy Weight Loss~Part One




Every day we are hammered on TV and social media about crazy exercise plans with terms like savage, extreme, shredded, animal and so on. On top of this we are bombarded with information on diet plans and “miracle” pills that claim to make you lose fifty pounds in two weeks or some other ridiculous claim which is totally unrealistic and unhealthy.
The truth of the matter is that it is very unhealthy to lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time. Doing so makes the body go into shock. The consequence of this is the release of stress hormones which make us feel edgy, anxious, and stressed. Stressing the body in such a way causes inflammation, which as I mentioned in many of my previous blogs can have serious negative effects on our general health. Pregnancy and Supplements~Part 1





Today’s blog is a continuation of my women’s health and baby topics. Recently I talked about Lecithin and how important it is in the neurological development of the fetus during pregnancy. Today I want to expand on the topic by making a connection between a decrease in the likelihood of Neural Tube Defects and supplementation with Folate and Vitamin B12 during pregnancy.
So what are neural tube defects and how can we prevent them? Well it all starts with a tube. That’s essentially what the fetus looks like at the very beginning of its development when it changes its shape from a ball of cells to a tube-like structure. The tube is what will actually become the baby’s gastrointestinal tract. Continue reading
