Organic Vs. Non-Organic Juicing

In the context of cancer prevention and also for the general health, there are few things as good as juicing or blending green leafy vegetables.

Parsley, kale, and spinach are the best. Other nutrient and antioxidant packed veggies and fruits are celery, carrots, cabbage, cilantro and Granny Smith apples. When juicing parsley and kale you don’t get much juice, but the juice that you do get is so concentrated that it forms jelly like globules that are very deep green in color. Such juices are packed with antioxidants, detoxifying compounds, and compounds that help protect DNA and cells as a whole from any damage that may result in the initiation of cancer formation.

Blending such vegetables with, for example, a frozen berry mix or frozen organic blue berries, is another great way to form a cocktail with anti-cancer properties. The added benefit of blending is that you still keep the fibre which benefits the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract as well as providing a softer consistency to stool. However, it will not concentrate all the great nutrients as well as juicing…..Read more….

Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS

Welcome back all of my dear readers. This months blog themes are Cancer awareness (prevention and what to do once you got it), and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). I will begin with the latter.

The prevalence of IBS in the Canadian population is 6%. It is 3 times more likely to be diagnosed in women than in men and is responsible for 30 billion dollars annually in medical costs and non medical costs (e.g. work absenteeism) in the US.

The symptoms are mostly abdominal pain with a predominance of diarrhea, constipation or both alternating with one another. Other symptoms are excessive flatulence and bloating.

A clear cause is still unknown. There are two prevalent theories. One is that a large proportion of IBS occurs after some kind of gastrointestinal infection. The other large proportion of IBS occurs in individuals that have undergone some kind of significant stressful event. This stressful event may have happened just prior to the IBS symptoms or years before. Needless to say psychological trauma and/or GI infections seem to correlate strongly with this condition. Radical Remedies: Hemp Hearts

NHS

Last Saturday on the radio at the Natural Health Show (Saturday 11am ET AM740 and Sunday 5pm PT AM980) I discussed the topic of Hemp Hearts as a super food. I find this topic dear to my heart as I have been involved in healthy body building most of my life and healthy plant based protein sources are essential for the practice of this sport.

This topic is of strong interest at the present in the athletic and the health supplement world because of two reasons. First, traditional animal based (including dairy) protein sources usually contain unhealthy fats and cholesterol. When broken down they acidify the body. This slows down muscle growth, breaks down bones (by dissolving the calcium) and creates an inflammatory state all over the body. The combination of bad fats, lack of fiber and excess acidity can cause a myriad of chronic and serious medical conditions. Furthermore, animal protein sources contain very little, if any, nutrients in the form of vitamins and minerals.
