The Health Benefits of Alcohol

We have all heard it before. Alcohol is bad for you! Alcohol causes accidents, alcohol is a carcinogen, and alcohol cases moral and social degradation! This is true but it requires high doses over a prolonged period of time and on a regular basis.

At low doses, and what I mean by that is 1 to 2 glasses of red wine each evening, it has more health benefiting than health damaging effects. Red wine in particular is the best source of alcohol since it also contains Resveratrol, the anti-oxidative molecule that protects our arteries and our hearts.

But what about alcohol itself? What are its health benefits, if any? Well, alcohol is a neuro-depressant. It slows down the firing of brain cells and thus eases the inhibitions and relaxes the mind. It binds to certain receptors in our brain that also bind a neurotransmitter called GABA. GABA is a molecule that inhibits over-excitation of our nerve cells.

Radical Remedies: Propolis

Propolis is a compound that bees use to seal and stabilize their hives. It also protects the hives from bacterial and fungal infections. Bees also use Propolis to mummify carcasses of small mammals and reptiles when they are too large to carry out of the hive. The bodies of these animals are preserved, preventing rotting and disease. Pretty incredible, right? It’s all thanks to the antibiotic nature of Propolis. Bees manufacture this compound by collecting resins on trees and flowers, as opposed to collecting pollen for honey production.

The exact composition of Propolis differs depending on the location of the hive and the source of the resin. If the hive is located in a natural environment among resinous trees, the Propolis has specific medicinal properties such as speeding up healing of wounds and burns. In fact, Brazilian Propolis has been found to be superior to silver sulfadiazine, which is the standard medical treatment for burns in hospitals.

Propolis is also excellent for maintaining oral hygiene. Propolis infused chewing gum will protect against cavities and other forms of infectious oral disease.

Radical Remedy: EPA vs. DHA

EPA and DHA belong to the Omega 3 fatty acids family. They are oils derived from cold water fish and krill which help protect them from cold water temperatures.

EPA is a potent anti-inflammatory and neuro-protective agent. Numerous human trials show that is very effective for major depression, schizophrenia and Huntington’s disease-a serious neurological condition. Studies also show that it holds great promise for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, mood disorders, bi-polar disorder and anxiety. An effective dose is 1000mg/day for at least a few months. Due to its anti-inflammatory component EPA is also very effective for inflammatory pain conditions such as arthritis.

EPA is also a potent inhibitor of blood clotting. As such it protects arteries from clogging up thus helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes. It does this without the risk of developing stomach ulcers as is the case with common over the counter medications used for this purpose.

DHA on the other hand comprises 50% of the weight of our brain. It is very important during pregnancy for the developing brain and eyes of the fetus. After birth it continues to be important as the child’s brain continues to grow. Mothers provide DHA in their breast milk and higher levels have been associated with better mental development in infants.

Fish oil supplements have come a long way since their introduction. When choosing a product be guided by your needs. If you are pregnant, a nursing woman or a child pick a product with a high DHA content. Otherwise your preference should be a high EPA product as this compound shows greater evidence for protecting us from a very significant number of serious medical conditions.

Radical Remedy: Food as Medicine

You really are what you eat.

The British Journal of Medicine states that a Mediterranean diet keeps people genetically younger, with their cells showing fewer signs of aging. The study was conducted on 5000 nurses over a decade. Specifically, scientists looked at structures called telomeres. These are protective caps at the end of chromosomes that protect our DNA from losing genetic information during cellular division. With each consecutive division, the telomeres shorten. When they reach a critical length, they signal cells to stop dividing, which essentially leads to aging.

Radical Remedy: Radical Cancer Treatment

I recently saw a documentary about a cancer patient who decided to move to a secluded cabin where he ate almost nothing, drank cold crystal spring water and bathed in the local spring. He was surrounded by pristine nature and clean air. The result: His cancer disappeared. Sound far-fetched? It’s actually not.

As cancer develops, it grows at a much quicker rate than the healthy surrounding tissue. This means that it requires more blood vessels, blood, nutrients and oxygen than healthy tissue. So if our bodies go into starvation mode, the cancer will suffer more and at a higher rate than the surrounding tissue. In theory, if we can last long enough, the cancer may die before we do.

Standard medical treatment effectively eradicates cancer in only 15% of cases on average. That makes the secluded cabin a pretty sound alternative or complementary treatment.

The key is to provide the body with nutrients as opposed to the calories in carbs, proteins and fats. It’s better to get vitamins, minerals and especially antioxidants, for example, via a juiced vegetable diet.

That’s because the healthy cells will be starved, but they will survive on the limited calories and nutrients derived from juiced vegetables. But the cancer cells, which need lots of calories to grow and survive, will starve more quickly. This may help push cancer fighting over the edge — on top of standard medical treatments.

By combining this treatment with a clean, quiet, pristine natural environment, we may see an even stronger effect than with vegetable juice diet alone.

Radical Remedy: MDMA for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

What does Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD conjure up for you? War veterans back from their battles abroad? Perhaps. But you don’t have to fight overseas to experience trauma. There are natural disasters, loss of loved ones, and many other experiences that can leave a permanent mark of emotional distress. PTSD sufferers often relive the trauma, experience anxiety, drug abuse and insomnia. Unfortunately, current medications are not very effective in treating this condition.

But a recent, pretty startling discovery has provided PTSD sufferers with some hope: MDMA, or the drug known on the street as ecstasy, was found to be very effective in treating PTSD for the long term. The first study showed such strong improvements in the patient’s well being that the effect was over 3 times stronger than that required to achieve statistical significance. The second study repeated the treatment and followed up with the patients for a period of two years. Even after two years, over 80% of the patients still showed significant improvement.

Radical Remedies: What is Detox?

From a medical point of view it is the neutralization and excretion of toxic substances from our bodies. Some of the most common sources of these toxic substances are heavy metals in food and water or industrial and/or combustion engine derived pollutants. We either inhale them, consume them in our food or drink, absorb them through our skin, or they are produced as by-products of our metabolism. They are either directly toxic to our cells or cause damage by stimulating the production of free radicals and inflammation. They not only cause cell damage but may also accelerate the aging process and contribute to the development of many unpleasant medical conditions.

The most important organ that detoxifies these substances is the liver, but the kidneys also play a very important role in concentrating these substances in the urine and excreting them out of the body. Other means of detox are by excretion through stool, bile and sweat.
