My Recipe for a Nutritious and Healthy Breakfast

This picture you see is the usual breakfast that I have about 30 minutes after I wake up. It is what I usually eat early in the morning to start the day, but sometimes I replace it with other recipes to keep it interesting and still healthy (I will add these in my future recipes).

My breakfast is preceded by one freshly squeezed pink grapefruit mixed with one freshly squeezed lemon and some water to fill the glass. The grapefruit stimulates liver enzymes for liver regeneration and detox, and it stimulates lipolysis (the breakdown of fat in my body into single units to be utilized for energy). The lemon juice alkalinizes my body (i.e. prevents acidosis) and provides vitamin C as an anti-oxidant. I usually drink the juice right when I wake up and then do my 20 minute morning work out. After this I cook my breakfast which is the main topic of today’s recipe.

So what you see at the top of the picture is one small fresh cucumber sliced in half, three pieces of fresh red pepper and a whole bunch of miniature red and yellow tomatoes.

To the left I add one piece of Wasa multigrain dry flat bread with a thin layer of cream cheese and two slices of smoked Norwegian salmon. The multigrain bread provides me with some complex carbs for energy and the salmon with Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. The Omega fatty acids protect arteries (especially in the heart and brain) and act as potent anti-inflammatory agents. They also improve brain function in a general sense. I also add the salmon because it is one of my favorite treats.

Radical Remedy: Transcendental Mediation

Stress is a silent killer. And there is no shortage of it in our fast paced, big-city lives. It burdens our mental health and releases the stress hormone cortisol – a hormone that contributes to cardiovascular disease, obesity, poor glucose control and diabetes.

Enter transcendental meditation. It not only reduces stress substantially, but it may also lead to deeper self-awareness and spiritual development. And it doesn’t have to be about religion — it’s about meditation’s proven effect on our health – not to mention the relaxed mind and body state it creates.

You don’t need special training to meditate. Just grab a pillow and sit down in a peaceful corner of your home, yard or office. Sit up straight and relax your body, ensuring that your shoulders and spine are aligned.

Radical Remedy: The Wonder of Amber

podcast

Baltic Amber use date back thousands of years. The Eastern Europeans used it as a tincture before of modern antibiotics came along. It was employed to increase immunity and treat pain like teething, stomach upsets, to boost energy in the elderly, and to enhance men’s libido.

How does it work?

Baltic amber is high in succinic acid. This substance is crucial to the Citric Acid Cycle, which generates energy in our cells. This acid is also vital to the cells of our immune system. It boosts the division rate of those cells and helps them eradicate pathogens. This is how amber imitates an antibiotic and helps increase vitality.

What can amber help ease?

Succinic acid is also a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and pain reliever. It prevents oxidative damage to cells in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, general back pain and menstrual pain.

But that’s not all. Amber necklaces and amber smoke were used in early times to ward off bad spirits. Seem implausible? Amber may actually reverse the effects of electromagnetic waves from electronics and from the sun. This 50-million –year-old precious gem has more than a few tricks up its sleeve.

Baby’s Immunity

Recently, a very interesting question has been posed to me. Should the mother continue breastfeeding even if she has the flu? The answer to this question is not an easy one because there are pros and cons, and they should both be weighed when deciding whether to breastfeed or not during an influenza infection.

Breastfeeding Versus Formula During Vaccinations

In general, breastfeeding is much better both for the baby and the mother than bottle formula feeding. The reason for this is that, first of all, breast milk is very rich in IgA type antibodies. These general antibodies protect the baby from gastrointestinal infections. Without these antibodies, infections would be very common as the baby’s immune system is not fully developed and is thus vulnerable. A small proportion of these antibodies are also absorbed into the bloodstream of the baby and offer some protection from other infections, such as respiratory infections. But this kind of protection is very limited, so it is a good idea to temporarily switch the baby to bottle formula feeding if the mother is experiencing the flu or any other type of respiratory infection. There are simply not enough IgA antibodies from the breast milk in the baby’s blood to provide significant protection from the influenza virus.

Radical Remedies: Medicinal Leeches

leeches

NHS

Last Saturday on the Natural Health Show, during my weekly Radical Remedies segment, I talked about medicinal leeches. It’s an old therapeutic practice that is now considered very radical, mostly because of the general appearance of these critters. The practice dates back to 800 BC in India and ancient Greece.

The general idea was to use leeches to draw out blood in order to keep the four humors of ancient medical philosophy in balance. The founder of this philosophy was Galen, who lived in ancient Greece and is a man considered by many to be one of the fathers of modern medicine. The four humors were blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. It was believed that too much or too little of any one of them could lead to disease. Too much blood would manifest itself as inflamed, reddened skin, so it was believed that letting out blood in a controlled fashion would fix the underlying cause of the illness.

Parsley the Superfood

shutterstock_132440573

This month is a body cleansing month. Therefore my blog posts would not be complete without writing about Parsley. Most people use this herb just as favouring, sprinkled on food, but only a few people realize that this humble herb is actually a Superfood. What I mean by a Superfood is a food that is packed with health promoting nutrients. Parsley certainly falls in this category. I also became interested in Parsley because of my growing interest in kidney health. Why kidneys? It’s because of my growing interest in detox in general and especially detox as preventative medicine. What I mean by this is that my medical focus is more and more on preventative medicine and treatment with natural compounds found in supplements and healthy foods and not just symptomatic pharmaceutical treatment of many diseases that could have been prevented by a healthy lifestyle and especially healthy foods such as Parsley….Read more…..

Cervical Health and Diindolymethane

Since the discovery of the Pap smear in the early part of the 20th century, the incidence of cervical cancer among women had dropped dramatically. This is especially true of countries where the cost of the Pap smear is covered by government health agencies and where the Pap smear is regularly promoted.

It is recommended that all women start an annual Pap smear at the age of 18 or at the age of first intercourse. The Pap smear is nothing more than swabbing, with a cotton swab to the cervix, in order to take a sample of the cells lining the cervix. The cells are then examined under the microscope to see if any cancerous changes have taken place. By doing regular annual examinations, the cancerous changes can be picked up very early and steps can be taken to prevent the development of cancer. If followed, this type of prevention is very effective, reducing the risk of cancer formation to practically zero. Although this is the best prevention of cervical cancer, there are some imperfections with the Pap smear. For one they are not 100% accurate (this is one of the reasons why regular yearly tests are recommended) and if they actually discover cancerous cells, the procedures and steps taken to prevent the cancer from forming are actually very uncomfortable. These procedures may also weaken the strength of the cervix, potentially leading to some complications during pregnancy….Read more….
