Digestive Health and Overeating

The Gastro Intestinal or GI tract performs the following functions:

  1. Breakdown of large food particles in the stomach (mainly by mechanical movement and acid)
  2. Digestion and absorption of food in the small intestine
  3. Absorption of fluids and vitamins in the large intestine
  4. Expulsion of waste material and toxins
  5. Immunological surveillance by the large number of lymph nodes surrounding the GI tract

The GI tract also includes the following:

Liver (mainly involved in metabolizing food and neutralizing toxins)

Pancreas (release of digestive enzymes and hormones that control sugar metabolism)

Gall bladder (involved in the production of bile for digestion of fats)

Starting with the stomach, the most common problems are:

  • Irritability
  • Pain
  • Ulcers
  • Heartburn (regurgitation of food and acid back into the esophagus)
  • Irritability, pain and ulcers are usually due to too much acid and too little protective mucous in the stomach

Discussing Sexual Health

Many men suffer from erectile dysfunction, lack of libido, (i.e., sex drive), and premature ejaculation due to over-excitement or sexually related anxiety. In the absence of sexual partners, this may be seen as a blessing. But for those of you forming intimate relationships, it can be a serious burden. Many turn to prescription medication to help this condition. But there are natural alternatives too.

The sexually enhancing properties of certain plants have been backed by well-conducted human clinical trials. These plants go by the name of Eurycoma longifolia, Tribulus terrestris, Maca, and the plants of the ginseng family.

The prescription route

So why search for natural, plant-based remedies when we have prescription medications such as Viagra and Cialis? Well, for one, these are prescription medications and they involve the hassle of going to a doctor and discussing intimate issues, which many men are reluctant to do. While doctors are well-versed in discussing sexual health issues, many men feel insecure or embarrassed when it comes to this topic.

Those who opt for the more anonymous online route should know that ordering these medications without a prescription poses serious health risks. Usually “black market” medications are shipped from Asia or India where there are no stringent regulatory standards in place to ensure that the drug produced is safe for human consumption and that it actually lives up to its claims. These medicines may be contaminated with harmful compounds or manufactured in a manner that produces a toxic byproduct.

Finally, Viagra and Cialis may have some potentially serious side effects. One of the more serious ones is a drastic drop in blood pressure, (which can cause loss of consciousness as well as heart attacks and strokes), when taken with nitrates. Nitrates are medications taken by patients with specific heart conditions such as coronary artery disease. Viagra and Cialis, (as well as other medicines in the same group), may also cause prolonged erections, which can cause excruciating pain and even permanent damage to the penis.

Going natural

Natural plant-based medicines seldom cause side effects and generally speaking, any side effects are usually much weaker in intensity than those from prescription medications. Furthermore, plant-based medications that are considered dietary supplements or health products are available without a prescription. This eliminates the bother and potential embarrassment that may be associated with a visit to the doctor.

The Canada-US Factor

There is a flip side to the story, however. Most plant-based medicines that are commonly used for enhancing sexual performance have very limited research data from human clinical trials behind them. There are over 30 such ingredients in the US market today. In Canada, only two plant-based extracts boast approved sexually-related claims: Tribulus terrestris and Maca. In my professional opinion, the number of ingredients in the US and their sexual health claims are unsubstantiated exaggerations.

On the Canadian side, the number of ingredients represents an oversimplification and does not correctly reflect the number of plant-based medicines that have rigorous and well-performed clinical trials showing their positive effects on sexual function.

We actually see this time and again when comparing Canada to the US. The two countries frequently show exaggerated and polarized extremes in their approach to many important issues: The first is the difference between the accepted claims for many plant-based medicines. Another is the two countries’ contrasting approach to their respective health care systems.

But my intention here is not to discuss political differences. My objective is to present plant-based medicines’ sexual enhancing functions, which have been substantiated by first-rate human clinical trials.

Next week I will come back to discuss Eurycoma longifolia jack, Tribulus terrestris (a mouthful, I know), Maca, and plants of the ginseng family in the context of enhancing sexual function— as well as the human trials that have been performed using these interesting plants. See you soon.

Radical Remedy: Echinacea

Echinacea can be used for many more things than just the flu.

With increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics; the growing resistance of the influenza virus to vaccines, and the often ineffective prescription medications for the common cold, it is no wonder that many people are looking to natural alternatives to strengthen their immunity.

The body of evidence in favor of Echinacea to do just that is quite convincing. This amazing plant contains compounds called Cichoic Acid and Echinacoside. The first one has been shown to eliminate (by a process called phagocytosis) bacteria and viruses by immune cells called phagocytes. It also inhibits the ability of the HIV virus entering into and thus infecting immune cells. Echinacoside on the other hand provides antibiotic activity against Staphylococci and Streptococci; both very common bacteria that cause numerous infections.

Maggot Debridement Therapy

As a Medical Doctor, I came across two conditions that physicians had lots of problems with: One was a diabetic foot wound that never wants to heal, and the other a pressure ulcer wound on the parts of the body on which immobile patients would lie for prolonged periods of time. What they have in common is that these wounds do not want to heal as a result of insufficient circulation. The consequence is an infected wound with lots of dead tissue that is often resistant to antibiotics. Modern medicines simply can not penetrate the wound because blood can not take them where they are needed. The problem is compounded by many antibiotic resistant bacterial strains (thanks to overzealous use of these medications).

Although there has been an effective treatment for these conditions for millennia the medical establishment is still stubborn in continuing using antibiotics and cleaning the wound with surgical procedures. Many times this is not effective and the patients suffer. The simple reason why this mysterious treatment that I will shortly reveal is rejected is because it seems primitive and unappetizing. But does that really matter when something really works? I think you will agree with me that the answer is… not really.

So now for the shock. Disinfected maggots from fly larvae have been found to be highly effective for cleaning and disinfecting these types of wounds. They are much more effective for cleaning the wound than surgical procedures. Furthermore, they secrete enzymes that kill antibiotic resistant bacteria; something neither antibiotics or surgical procedures are able to do. The procedure has so much scientific evidence that the Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of maggots for this purpose under the category of a medical device. The problem is no one teaches this in medical schools and most new physicians have no idea about this effective treatment. So next time you find yourself with a wound that refuses to heal mention this to your doctor and get the treatment that really works and be immune to any sarcastic grin!

The Pineal Gland and Fluorinated Water

The pineal gland, which is also known as the third eye, is situated at the center of the brain where the two hemispheres meet. The pineal gland produces Melatonin, the hormone that initiates and maintains sleep. As we age, the pineal gland calcifies – something which may diminish its function. This may explain why so many elderly people suffer from insomnia. This process of calcification has been linked to an increased intake of fluoride, which makes sense, because fluoride binds to calcium rendering it solid.

Fluoride is added to our tap water because of its tooth decay prevention claims. But recent studies suggest that it is actually calcium that protects teeth and bone. In fact, a high fluoride and low calcium intake can actually cause tooth decay. The fluoride that is added to tap water is even more dangerous than fluoride itself. It is actually an industrial waste product called hydrofluorosilinic acid that is regulated by Canadian Environmental Protection Agency as an environmental pollutant and water contaminant. There is also increasing evidence that fluoride and calcium work together to harden arteries, which is one of the leading causes of heart attacks.

The pineal gland is not all about Melatonin. It is also the main producer of a substance called dimethyltryptamine or DMT. This substance is prevalent in plants and animals. Its role is still unknown, but it is highly hallucinogenic and is released in large quantities during birth and death. Makes you wonder what else the pineal gland has to offer.

Transcendental Meditation

Stress is a silent killer. And there is no shortage of it in our fast paced, big-city lives. It burdens our mental health and releases the stress hormone cortisol – a hormone that contributes to cardiovascular disease, obesity, poor glucose control and diabetes.

Enter transcendental meditation. It not only reduces stress substantially, but it may also lead to deeper self-awareness and spiritual development. And it doesn’t have to be about religion — it’s about meditation’s proven effect on our health – not to mention the relaxed mind and body state it creates.

You don’t need special training to meditate. Just grab a pillow and sit down in a peaceful corner of your home, yard or office. Sit up straight and relax your body, ensuring that your shoulders and spine are aligned.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself moving from your head to your toes, or the reverse, and relax each body part as you reach it. Be mindful of inhaling and exhaling as you do this. If a thought enters your mind, follow it neutrally, without judgment. If no thoughts enter your mind, bask in the stillness of your body. Chant the word “ohm”, drawing out and lengthening the word as you utter it. Do this for 5-10 minutes. When you feel you’re done, rub your hands together and gently massage your face. Bring your hands to your knees and open your eyes.

A great time to practice meditation is first thing in the morning and before you go to sleep. It can be challenging to ignore the chatter in your mind, especially if it is casting doubt on your meditation. But you will be amazed at how much tranquility this can bring to your life.

Radical Remedy: Hemp Hearts

If you are looking for a new superfood, here is one you don’t want to miss. It’s called a hemp heart and it’s a hempseed without its shell. Its composition is simply mind blowing. Containing 33% of protein it provides all the amino acids which are required for life. This includes all the essential amino acids that need to come from our diet. This plant based protein is also a great source of energy. The body prefers to burn it instead of converting it to fat.

When digested and utilized by the body, it produces an alkaline environment. This is in contrast to animal based proteins. An alkaline environment around cells promotes health. Bones are not dissolved, muscle rebuilds faster, circulation is improved and all the cells of the body are much happier.

Another third of Hemp Hearts are polyunsaturated fats mostly omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. These fats are excellent for brain health. They improve our memory and overall mood. They are also strongly anti-inflammatory thus benefiting patients with inflammatory conditions as well as supporting a healthy cardiovascular system. The fats are also an excellent source of energy. They suppress our appetite and make us feel fuller. With the addition of a proper diet individuals have lost and kept off a pound of fat per day.

Finally the last third is composed of fiber, which is excellent for digestive health and for preventing colon cancer, some complex carbohydrates and an impressive array of minerals and vitamins. Iron, calcium, and many essential vitamins are all present at impressive but still safe levels.

You can add these amazing seeds for optimal health to your oatmeal, sprinkled on cereal, added to yogurt, mixed in a smoothie or a protein shake, or mixed with some fruit or in any other way that you like or prefer.

They are tasty, healthy, and absolutely amazing anyway you look at it.
