Anxiety and sleep disorders are on the rise. Long working hours, competitive jobs, social media overload and the higher performance and appearance expectations of our big-city lifestyles are taking their toll. Add to this the stress of raising children and making sure the bills are paid on time and there you have it: anxiety bordering on paranoia, and the inability to fall asleep or get enough quality sleep each night.

Many people turn to prescription medications like benzodiazepines or barbiturates, both of which are highly addictive. When taken for a prolonged period of time and then stopped, benzodiazepines can lead to a life threatening condition called delirium tremens. Barbiturates cause liver toxicity and the potential to make you stop breathing in your sleep. Pretty serious — to say the least.

But there are natural and safe alternatives, like Kava, or kava-kava, as it is sometimes called. This south pacific plant that has been used safely for centuries in that region as a relaxant. Its effect is quite astonishing. Only a few drops of the extract puts you in a calm and relaxed mood within minutes. The effect is also long lasting — long enough help you sleep deeply all night. But like many natural products, kava has been the target of criticism. There was talk of Kava being harmful to the liver. However, a through review of the research and laboratory studies did not support this conclusion and the results were found to be unreliable. Most patients with negative reactions already had a liver condition or were on medications that harm the liver. Lucky for us, reliable research does support the safe use of kava at the recommended dosage. Sleep well.
