The doctor with alternative solutions

It’s October … let’s not get the cold.

It’s October, it’s still nice outside and we are blessed with warmer temperatures than usual for this time of year. The leaves are turning their colour, the walks in the park are beautiful and the turkey smells good from the kitchen oven. But as usual, life will have two sides to the story. It’s the old philosophy of yin and yang, the balance of positives and negatives, and the balance of life.
So what am I talking about? Aside from all the pleasant warmth we try to surround ourselves with, we are faced with increasingly colder temperatures at night and in the morning, more cold rain falls, our bodies weakened by going through the process of adapting to changing weather conditions, forgetting to dress warmer, and the mysterious reappearance during this time of year of the phenomenon of nature called Influenza. Why do I call it a phenomenon? It’s because it’s not really alive. It’s a virus! A virus is just a protein capsule surrounding a strand of genetic code which needs our living and thriving cells to make copies of itself.
The reason why I wanted to bring this topic up for discussion is two fold. First it’s the flu season and second it’s because we have an ever growing concern with this alien-like entity. The first problem is that our vaccines are only partly effective and on many occasions cause a negative result. Influenza is a type of virus which undergoes many genetic mutations at a rapid rate. This means that it becomes protected and immune to the vaccines we use against it. This is why every year laboratories make new types of vaccines to keep up with these mutations. Even then, the vaccines cover only a certain number of Influenza strains but not all of them. This makes the flu vaccine only partially effective.
The second problem with the flu vaccine is that it is commonly made with egg ingredients. Many people are allergic to egg products and can not use the vaccine as a result.
The third problem is that the vaccine works by tricking the immune system into “thinking” that there is an infection going on. This is actually what is desired because by making the immune system “think” that the infection is actually occurring the immune system starts producing antibodies (proteins designed to destroy the actual virus when a real infection does occur). This way when the real virus enters our body the immune system is already prepared to fight against it. The draw back of this process is that in the initial stages when the immune system is tricked into thinking that an infection is going on there is a lot of inflammation going on which weakens our bodies. This is the transitional stage that lasts until the antibodies are formed and the immune system becomes stronger than before. The problem arises when we are actually exposed to the real virus during this transitional period. This has a high probability of happening since most people decide to become vaccinated during the flu season when the virus is around. When this happens the chances that the virus will cause an infection is higher, and the severity of the illness, at least in the initial stages, is usually more severe. In other words, in the initial stages after taking the vaccine it makes us more vulnerable to infection if we are exposed to the virus. I have experienced this phenomenon myself.
Furthermore, the prescription drugs for Influenza only shorten the infection by about 2 days, which is not that significant. They also have some potentially serious side effects.
So what are the natural remedies for the common cold? Well there are a number of very effective products and foods and I will be discussing a number of them during Radical Remedies on the Natural Health Show. The most effective and common ones are Garlic, Echinacea, American Ginseng, Zinc and Copper, immunologically stimulating mushrooms, oil of Oregano, Seabuckthorn, Red Elm bark extract, and Black Elderberry. All of these plants have only positive effects on our health and our immune system without causing any negative side effects. Some of these, like Garlic, can be found in any grocery store. You can find the rest at vitarock.com under the names like Rx Balance Modu Cold, Rx Balance Oil of Oregano, Land Art Red Elm Bark Cough Syrup, Sambucol Black Elderberry extract, and SBT Seabuckthorn Soothing Salve. These products are all natural and work with our bodies to fight off infections or to protect us from getting them in the first place, without the burden of increased susceptibility during transitional periods of vaccines or unpleasant side effects of prescription meds.
Stay warm, my friends!
